Promoting Prevention and Targeting Remission of Asthma
A European Forum for Research and Education in Allergy and Airway Diseases Consensus Statement on Raising the Bar in Asthma Care
Given Recent Innovations, the EUFOREA Asthma Expert Panel in close collaboration with affiliated Global Experts, organized a Consensus Meeting in London (UK), chaired by Prof. Zuzana Diamant and Prof. Milos Jesenak, to discuss possible strategies how to help Raise the Bar in Asthma Care.
In line with concurrent guidelines, the Expert Panel agreed that the new Goal of Asthma Management should be to obtain a High(er) Level of durable Asthma Control in the Absence of Systemic Corticosteroids or high doses of maintenance treatment. In line with previous EUFOREA publications on this topic (see ao Asthma Pocket Guide), the Panel advocated a Personalized (ie pheno/endotype-directed) and Holistic approach to Asthma Management targeting Underlying Pathways and Treatable Traits. It was felt that Preventive Measures and Treatment Modalities – implemented early in the disease course – should be integrated into the New Treatment Strategy to Prevent Disease Progress and to Achieve Remission.
The Expert Panel’s Recommendations and Practical Algorithms for feasible implementation of the New Approach as well as reflections on Future Steps and Unmet Needs have recently been published in CHEST to inspire peers and to help pave the way.
